However, those who do get the opportunity should use Vanity Fair as an example of what not to do. The magazine included Nyong’o in a tweet on Wednesday about its upcoming issue’s Vanities section and is now under fire for what some people say is a case of making the star’s deep-chocolate skin tone appear lighter.

The outrage is obvious, and it wouldn’t be the first time a magazine has been accused of “brightening” the complexion of a star of color. Black women from Beyoncé to Kerry Washington to Gabourey Sidibe have all appeared lighter in magazines. In the case of Nyong’o, was it purposely done in Photoshop? And if so, to what end?
