Inside the Life of Mathew Knowles, The Man Who Was Behind The Success of Beyoncé

Mathew Knowles is an author, professor, entrepreneur and music executive, who also happens to have two incredibly talented daughters who have found major success in the music industry. Although he’s had massive success in business, he’s also been plagued with personal struggles, including ongoing infidelity issues and a fight with breast cancer.

While he’s one of the driving forces behind one of the most successful girl groups in history, Knowles has been back in the news lately, accusing the music industry of not giving him his flowers because of the color of his skin.

We’re taking a look at the story of Mathew Knowles, the man who helped create Queen Bey.

Born in Gadsen, Alabama, Knowles graduated from Nashville’s Fisk University in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. He also holds an MBA in Strategic Planning and Organizational Culture and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from Cornerstone Christian Bible College. Before getting into the music industry, he had a successful medical sales career with Xerox Medical Services.

Knowles has shared his knowledge of business and the music industry, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on entertainment and entrepreneurship at Texas Southern University and a course in Music and the Digital Age at The University of Houston.

    Meeting Tina

Knowles first met then-Celestine Beyoncé in the late 1970s at a party he threw for his roommate who had just graduated law school. But rather than approach her with a smooth line about her looks, Knowles said he got on her case for putting her hands on some items in his collection of vinyl records.

“I had a strong vinyl collection and I didn’t want no damn fingerprints on my vinyl,” he said in an interview.

    Starting a Family

Shortly after they met, Mathew and Tina got married in 1980. They wasted no time growing their family, welcoming daughter Beyoncé in 1981 and Solange in 1986.

Tina Knowles says she noticed problems in her marriage to Mathew early on, but kept convincing herself that staying together was the right thing to do.

“There were already problems in our marriage that first year,” she wrote in her memoir, ‘Matriarch.’ “But the suspicions I had would get washed away by the fact that our love was stronger than a misstep.”

    Music Mogul

Tina put her issues with Mathew’s infidelity on the back burner and poured her energy into supporting her daughter Beyoncé and her girl group, Destiny’s Child.

As the group’s manger, Mathew put the ladies to work, pushing them through hours of voice, dance and media training.

In 1992, Knowles founded his artist management and production company, Music World Entertainment Corporation. He has executive producer credits on over 100 award-winning albums.

    Divorce

After nearly 30 years of marriage, Tina filed for divorce from Mathew in 2009 when she learned he had fathered a child, son, Nixon Knowles, with former actress Alexsandra Wright. Their divorce was finalized in 2011, but it wouldn’t be the last child Matthew would have outside of their marriage.

Knowles fathered another child, Koi Knowles, with model Taqoya Branscomb in 2010, although the news didn’t come out until years later.

    Breaking Off Business With Beyoncé

In 2011, Beyoncé announced that her father would no longer manage her career. At the time, allegations were swirling that Knowles got the boot because he took money from his daughter that he wasn’t entitled to, as TMZ reported.

But both Bey and her father maintained that the decision to stop representing his daughter was strictly business and that there was no love lost on either side.

“The decision for Beyoncé and Music World Entertainment to part was mutual. We did great things together, and I know that she will continue to conquer new territories in music and entertainment,” Mathew Knowles wrote in a statement about the decision. “Business is business and family is family. I love my daughter and am very proud of who she is and all that she has achieved. I look forward to her continued great success.”

    Another Chance

Shortly after parting ways, Tina says she and Mathew tried to give their relationship another try for a brief, but unsuccessful period. She says he tried to reassure her that he had gotten help and changed his ways.

“I didn’t believe him, but he was persistent, proved he’d gotten help, and as he courted me, I found myself falling in love again,” she wrote in her memoir, ‘Matriarch.’ “The magnetic pull between us, this cosmic cord I had tried to cut so many times, was stronger than ever.”

In July 2013, Knowles tied the knot again with realtor Gena Charmaine Avery. However, two important guests were missing from the ceremony, daughters Beyoncé and Solange, who issued statements saying they had previous engagements the kept them from being there.

    Motivating Others

Over the years, Knowles has used his success in business to motivate others, speaking to employees at leading companies about winning business strategies.

In 2015, Knowles published “The DNA of Achievers, 10 Traits of Highly Successful Professionals.” The book breaks down the traits that are commonly found in people who are at the top of their game in their fields, including risk-taking, work ethic and learning from failure.

    Breast Cancer Survivor

In 2019, Knowles revealed that he had been diagnosed with breast cancer. In an interview with Michael Strahan, he said he went to have a mammogram after noticing recurring spots of blood appear on his shirt and his sheets. Fortunately, the cancer was caught at Stage 1A, and Knowles did not need to have chemotherapy, although he did have a mastectomy.

Knowles told Strahan that he wanted to share his story to encourages others, particularly Black men, to make their health a priority.

    Overlooked in the Music Business

Although Knowles achieved a great deal of success managing his daughter’s musical careers, he says he never got the respect from the industry he was due because of the color of his skin.

“Beyoncé was the number one female artist of the decade from 2000 to 2009. Don’t take my word, just go research it. Guess who was the number one female group in the world? Destiny’s Child” Knowles said during an episode of the “Bag Fuel” podcast. “But the other part of that, if I was a white manager, I would be considered the number one manager ever. So, I never get that respect that’s deserved.”

He and Mama Tina Are On Good Terms These Days

Although their relationship was rocky, Mathew and Tina say they’re on good terms these days.

“Yes, I had some tumultuous, terrible times with Mathew, but I never questioned whether he loved me or my kids,” Tina told Gayle King in an interview. “We are on good terms because we did a good job. We did some really good stuff too.”

The respect goes both ways. Mathew recently took to social media to congratulate her on the success of her memoir – which included lots of dirt about their relationship.

“Tina, congratulations on your New York Times #1 bestseller ‘Matriarch.’ Mathew,” he captioned a May 1 post on X.

  • Trump Finally Responds to Federal Judge’s Ultimatum on SNAP Benefits

Trump Finally Responds to Federal Judge’s Ultimatum on SNAP Benefits

After two federal judges issued President Donald Trump an ultimatum regarding SNAP benefits, the Trump administration has finally put forth a plan to keep millions of Americans from starving… at least for now.

We previously told you millions went without SNAP benefits starting Nov. 1 after Congress failed to come to an agreement over funding. The pause to food assistance marked the first time in history SNAP had ever been cut off. Expectedly, Democrats, Republicans, human rights activists and federal judges pushed back against the president, who ultimately had the power to overturn this unprecedented issue.

Several states took legal action against the administration. In Massachusetts, Judge Indira Talwani ruled that the government is required to tap into emergency money for SNAP, even if it’s just making partial payments. She gave Trump until Monday (Nov. 3) to come up with a plan to make it happen.

In response to the judge’s ruling, Trump took to his social media app, Truth Social, saying he “instructed our lawyers to ask the Court to clarify how we can legally fund SNAP as soon as possible.” He went on to blame Democrats for the shutdown: “If we are given the appropriate legal direction by the Court, it will BE MY HONOR to provide the funding, just like I did with Military and Law Enforcement Pay,” he wrote

The administration told a federal court in accordance with the Monday deadline that it will partially pay out SNAP benefits to the nearly 42 million Americans on the program. He only promised to fund assistance only during the month of November, according to the court filing. SNAP recipients are now set to receive 50 percent of what they normally would under the president’s new court order.

Under past government shutdowns, emergency money has always been used to provide food assistance for Americans. The Trump administration previously argued that money in the $5 billion contingency fund could not be used for SNAP. But after another judge in Rhode Island pushed back against Trump’s claims about funding, the administration drastically changed its tune.

In a separate lawsuit, Judge John J. McConnell, Jr. ruled in favor of Democracy Forward, the organization which requested a temporary restraining order in light of the pause to benefits, CBS News reported. On Saturday (Nov. 1), McConnell gave Trump the same Monday deadline to figure out a way to use contingency funds for SNAP. Both McConnell and Talwani ruled it’s up to the Trump administration to decide exactly how much money will be distributed.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees SNAP, sent out a memo last week declaring “the well has run dry.” For over a month, Congress has been at a stand still regarding federal funding. Democrats want Republicans to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies for Americans; Republicans want the government to open up before any negotiations can be made.

“Right now, the problem is everybody wants to win,” W.V. Sen. Jim Justice said of the current debacle. “And you’ve got a lot of people really hurting, and that really upsets me,” the Republican continued.

However, retwists might not be your only concern. It’s getting colder, which means your haircare routine will have to change to make sure your hair stays healthy and hydrated.

    Quick Weaves

Bundles can be expensive, and if you’re ballin on a budget, a quick weave is a style you could consider. Quick weaves are cheaper, versatile and chic.

    Recycle Your Wig

Ladies, before you throw away a perfectly good lacefront, why not recycle it? Turn that wig into a leave-out and get at least another month of use from it.

    Water and Oil Retwist

Again, it is important to make sure your hair is well moisturized, and one easy way to do that is by making sure you retwist your hair using just oil and water.

    Pixie Cut Styles

    Screenshot: TikTok (@quincijane)

Pixie cuts are fabulous, and it’s common for them to be slicked down after hours of moulding and texturizing. And while that does look good, finger coiling your pixie is just as elegant and something you can do from home in half the time.

    Silk Presses

It is silk press season, but sometimes silk presses don’t last as long as you would want them to. However, they can easily be brought back to life with some dry shampoo and a quick run over with some straighteners.

    Shape Ups

It’s not always worth going to the barber for something you can do from the comfort of your home. These are some tips to follow so that you can start doing your own shape ups.

    Braid Styles:

  • Black America Responds to the Government Shutdown…and Whew!

Black America Responds to the Government Shutdown…and Whew!

If you woke up this morning hoping that the government shutdown was just a bad dream, think again. As of Wednesday (Oct. 1), the government has officially closed its doors, which means that the money flow has stopped for certain federal agencies.

As President Donald Trump and the Democrats duke it out over healthcare funding — among other things — Black Americans who stand to endure the worst effects of the shutdown are sounding off on social media about how it all will impact their pockets.

“Omg, the government is shut down! Time to dial it in on our finances. SMH,” one person wrote on X

The shutdown threatens layoffs, service cuts and a major blow to Medicaid and Medicare, all thanks to staffing shortages. Food assistance programs like the Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children are looking at empty coffers real soon, according to The New York T and BBC. For Black folks, it’s the same old song and dance.

“Every day it’s something,” posted one user on X, in reponse to the news.

“I knew the sequel (Donald Trump’s second term as president) would be even more chaotic,” responded another.

Congressional candidate Isaiah Martin called it Donald Trump’s shutdown: “Trump controls all three branches of government! THIS IS HIS SHUTDOWN”

Former Vice President Kamala Harris shared similar sentiments as she posted that it was Republican Congressmembers who caused the shutdown:

“President Trump and Congressional Republicans just shut down the government because they refused to stop your health care costs from rising,” Harris told her followers. “This is their shutdown.”

This shutdown is the second government shutdown to happen under Donald Trump, with the first being in December of 2018, which one X user pointed out was the longest shutdown in U.S. history:

“Fun fact: The longest shutdown in U.S. history lasted 35 days, from December 22, 2018, to January 25, 2019, during President Donald Trump’s administration.”

While chaos ensues, folks are also thinking about those who will be most impacted:

“Sending love and support to anyone impacted by the government shutdown.”

Sara Gonzales, a host for Blaze TV, an American conservative media company founded in 2018 with strong conservative views, crashed the Aug. 14 event as Crockett was speaking about her grandmother. Gonzales can be seen in a video she uploaded on X interrupting Crockett, shouting out, “Jasmine! The people of Dallas deserve better than a fake ghetto hood rat.” The Democratic lawmaker looked over at her and smirked before the crowd erupted in boos.

“No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,” Crockett could be heard saying. “Listen, listen, listen, listen, listen.” Gonzales doubled down on her insults, asking, “Do they know you’re a rich kid from Missouri?”

She asked a second time, “Do your people know you’re a spoiled rich kid from Missouri?,” referencing how Crockett is from St. Louis and moved to Texas for law school.

One woman screamed at Gonzales, “Get your ass out of here!” while one man told her to, “Get out! Get out!” as she was escorted out by security. And she didn’t leave silently. “Don’t touch me! Get her off me!” Gonzales responded. “Get off me! Get the f*ck off me!”

She even asked officers, “Are you proud?” as she was forced to leave the town hall. Gonzales was told by police to leave the property, and threatened to place her in handcuffs if she did not comply with their orders to leave. But wait, there’s more.

A white woman who goes by “blonde conservative” online also confronted Crockett at the same event. She posted video of her own interaction of when she asked Crockett, “Why do you hate white people? Why are you racist towards white people? Why are you racist towards white people?”

She willing left after someone off-camera told her she needed to skedaddle, too.

Crockett, who was speaking at the Dallas County Blue Texas Organizing Rally to urge her supporters to turn Texas blue to defeat the GOP in the 2026 midterm elections, according to Dallas Weekly, responded to the haters.

“Listen, this is part of the problem,” Crockett said in the video. “This is part of the problem. I want y’all to be part of the solution. We’re going to show these people that ignorance will not win today.”

  • Whoopi Goldberg Claps Hard at Barack Obama, You Won’t Believe What She Says About Him

Whoopi Goldberg Claps Hard at Barack Obama, You Won’t Believe What She Says About Him

Whoopi Goldberg isn’t really feeling former President Barack Obama right now. And now, she’s using her biggest platform to express why.

Goldberg shared her harsh words for Obama on Tuesday’s episode of “The View.” Her words were prompted by comments he made at a private fundraiser in New Jersey over the weekend where he accused Democrats of “whining” about Trump and all of his bad decisions. He also said that they need to change their messaging, stop looking for a “Messiah,” do a little less “navel-gazing” and “toughen up.”

She also mentioned an interview with “Shark Tank” entrepreneur and billionaire Mark Cuban who echoed similar sentiments as the president and decided to call both men out and explain the error in their messaging.

“Let me remind everybody who was out on the front lines marching, when we had the giant marches that went on. It was the people. The people went out. They were not navel-gazing, it was older people who were saying, ‘Why are you touching my social security?’” Goldberg said in response to the comments. “It was not people whining, it was about people saying, ‘Why are you taking these rights away from my child when my child was born here?’”

She later added: “This has not been about Democrats laying back. This has been about y’all. This has been about y’all because their [Democrats] messaging has always been the same. Democrats have been angry at what this man tried to do the last time, they’ve been angry this time. With much due respect to you both, you are pointing the finger to the wrong person when you say Democrats.”

Goldberg later expressed that folks like Obama and Cuban need to change their vantage point and realize that Democratic voters and the people who support their ideologies have been doing much more than just complaining about Trump. She also noted that the only people who need to switch up what they’re saying are folks like Obama and Cuban, and not those who’ve been on the front lines speaking out and showing up for the cause.

Neither Obama nor Cuban have responded to Goldberg’s comments. Check out the conversation below.
