Since the University of Miami (UM) is known for being one of the top party schools in the country, it shouldn’t be shocking to know they go crazy for homecoming. From block parties to the annual ceremonies, students at the UM always have a good time. The Boat Burning Ceremony is a tradition dating back to 1956, where students gather at Lake Osceola to watch fireworks and the burning of a boat. Legend says if the mast falls before the boat sinks, then the school will win their homecoming game the next day, College Raptor reported.

The Ohio State University is huge, we mean really big. So it makes sense Homecoming should be grand. Nothing says homecoming like an annual tailgate, and at Ohio State University, they mean business! If you ever get the chance to visit the college– home of the famous Brutus Buckeye mascot– expect to see folks dressed down in red and silver repping their team, who are the reigning national champions.

In Clemson, the renowned university is central to everything. The town is where boys begin athletic training at a young age. Homecoming is a significant event for everyone, not just the school but all residents. Celebrations commence weeks in advance. According to to Clemson University, the first sign of approaching Homecoming is the appearance of telephone poles on the football field. These poles support the creations that will become Homecoming floats. Clemson reported, “Float building is a 24-hour-a-day process during Homecoming Week, and late-night activities have become custom.”

At the University of Maryland, Black students get together to celebrate homecoming in their own special way. The Nyumburu Homecoming Tailgate was curated to be a safe space for Black students at the PWI to let loose and be unapologetic! The university’s National Pan-Hellenic Council’s Vice President of Internal Affairs, Therman Hawkins III, told Black Explosive News the event is “a staple for the Black community on campus, as well as the Black alumni community, because everyone gets to come back and fellowship with each other.”

Michigan State University

Sure you’ve heard about the Michigan State University Spartans… but do you know the lore behind the school’s second mascot, Zeke the Wonder Dog? Since the ’70s, “Zeke” has been catching frisbees and performing during halftime shows at MSU. And perhaps on of the most important homecoming traditions for students is the chance to Stuff-A-Zeke– like Build-A-Bear but strictly in honor of Zeke. Students take their stuffed Zekes home and can keep them forever!

GO DAWGS! The University of Georgia (UGA) has built a strong reputation on the back of their football team, which is evident in their no. 5 ranking for the 2025 to 2026 season, according to ESPN. But whenever the Bulldogs come to the football field, so do the fans to the stands, and the homecoming game is no exception. When you pop out at a UGA homecoming game, expect lights, smoke, screaming fans and old fashion southern hospitality.

Instead, GSU is a Predominantly Black Institution (PBI) due to its diverse student body with around 40 percent of the population being Black. With all this in mind, homecoming at GSU is always Blackity, Black! From tailgates and darties (day parties) to the annual “Pantherfest” and block party, you’re bound to be entertained.
