Was there ever a truer affirmation and prophecy than Lizzo declaring herself “100% that bitch?” If we take stock of her Grammy nominations as evidence, the answer is an overwhelming: No, Ma’am!

The singer and songwriter netted the most nominations out of any artist for the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, bagging eight total nominations. These include the four major categories: Record of the Year (“Truth Hurts”), Album of the Year (Cuz I Love You (Deluxe)), Song of the Year (“Truth Hurts”) and Best New Artist.
Competing against her for Best New Artist is Lil Nas X, who secured six total nominations, including two for his viral hit “Old Town Road” (Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance), and additional recognition for “Panini” (Best Rap/Sung Performance) and his debut album, 7.
Charlotte native and very-good-music video-maker DaBaby also landed two Grammy nominations—his first ones—for “Suge,” while Nipsey Hussle was posthumously recognized for “Racks in the Middle.” But during a year when “Hot Girl Summer” was the ubiquitous catchphrase of 2019, women were disappointingly absent from the top rap categories this year. Only Cardi B received a (partial) nod—for hubby Offset’s “Clout,” on which she was featured.
Other notables include Forever first lady Michelle Obama, who received a Grammy nomination for “Best Spoken Word” album for her reading of her bestselling memoir, Becoming. Beyoncé also landed several nominations for her work on The Lion King: The Gift including Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance for her anthemic single, “Spirit.” Homecoming, the documentary about her unforgettable 2018 Coachella performance, was also recognized by the Grammys this year for Best Music Film.
