Chaney, who played Poot on the HBO classic β€œThe Wire,” took to social media to share a status update on Malachi’s recovery. The day the storm hit the neighborhood of Locust Grove slightly outside Atlanta, Chaney said he was home with his 19-year-old son. The powerful winds of the tornado elevated the home off its hinges but also sent Malachi flying 300 feet into the woods, per WSB-TV. He was found by neighbors and search team members.

The teen suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung, a neck injury and a fractured facial bone forcing him to spend his 19th birthday inside Grady Memorial Hospital’s ICU, the report says.

β€œThe worst pain of my entire life as a father watching my Son in this hospital bed in so much pain! Take the house, take the money, take the cars all the material things I just want my Son back in great health like he was!” he wrote in a May 31 Instagram post.

Chaney was quite transparent on social media sharing the harrowing account of that day but also the pain as a father watching his son fight for his life. The teen’s family said him being able to speak was a miracle on its own.

Sunday, Father’s Day, Chaney posted another update to his son but with a much less somber sentiment. Instead, he was celebrating his son’s progress form rehabilitating at the Shepherd Center. Chaney posted a video to Instagram of Malachi walking on his own through the hallways of the center - a major victory despite the odds.

β€œTHIS IS THE BEST GIFT I COULD EVER RECEIVE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE on #FathersDay!” Chaney wrote. β€œMALACHI CHANEY IS WALKING! (He has to wear the neck brace when he’s up) it’s mandatory! I’m so emotional right now (Happy Tears). Last week my son had to walk with a walker. JEHOVAH SURPRISED ME & MY WIFE TODAY WITH THIS ONE! THANK YOU GOD! We know we still have a long road long journey to recovery BUT we making progress #TeamMalachi FOR LIFE”

Chaney indeed received the best Father’s Day gift out of everyone seeing his son conquer such critical conditions.
