The Georgia teacher who reportedly called a student "the dumbest girl I have ever met" and added, "You know what your purpose is going to be? To have sex and have children because you ain’t never gonna be smart," resigned Monday night, the Atlanta-Journal Constitution reports.
Cory Hunter is the Greene County High School teacher who reportedly told Shaniaya Hunter, 16 (who is not related to the teacher), "I have been around for 37 years, and clearly you are the dumbest girl I have ever met."
Greene County School System Superintendent Chris Houston confirmed Tuesday during a board of education meeting that Hunter had resigned.
"He will not be returning to the classroom," Houston said, AJC reports. "In submitting his resignation, he verbally expressed his apologies to his students and fellow staff members for any disruption caused to the school by the controversy over the last several weeks."
Shaniaya, who suffers from severe vision problems, was recording her mid-December lesson on her iPad when she asked Hunter who Sojourner Truth was.
Hunter reportedly launched into a four-minute verbal attack, which was recorded on the iPad and included Hunter's comment that the student's purpose in life would be to have sex and have babies.
"It really hurt me inside," Shaniaya told WSB-TV earlier this month. Shaniaya's mother went directly to the school with the recording, but nothing happened. Ben Windham, the lawyer for Shaniaya's family, threatened to sue the teacher and the school. The story made national news, and now Hunter has resigned.
"It is a shame that it took a lawyer to be involved," Windham told the newspaper. "It is a shame that it took this long. I am just glad for Shaniaya Hunter. She can go to school and hopefully move on."
