Fresh from the “double take” file, desperate heroin addicts in some countries in Africa (Tanzania, Kenya and the island of Zanzibar) are injecting themselves with another addict’s blood. The practice, called “flashblood” or “flushblood,” puts users at the highest possible risk of contracting hepatitis or AIDS. In Tanzania, many of the people who practice it are female sex workers, who share blood with other sex workers to help them avoid withdrawal symptoms. In contrast, most of the people who engage in the deadly practice in Zanzibar are men. Reports have surfaced that “flashblooding” is taking place in other countries as well. This is a deadly trend with deadly consequences.
