Fidel Ángel “Fidelito” Castro Díaz-Balart, 68, the eldest son of Cuban revolutionary and former President Fidel Castro, committed suicide Thursday, Cuba’s state media reported.

He was found Thursday morning in Havana and is said to have suffered from depression.

Fidel "Fidelito" Castro Díaz-Balart was both his father's namesake and cousin to the Miami exile politicians who bitterly opposed Castro. He had run Cuba's nuclear power program until a dispute with his father. Castro Díaz-Balart committed suicide today, per Cuban state media.

Díaz-Balart was a nuclear physicist who served as a scientific adviser to the Council of State and Vice President of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba.

He was Fidel Castro’s firstborn son and namesake. The elder Castro died Nov. 25, 2016.
