From Chicago to Decatur, These Cities Are Now One Step Closer to Reparations

While America has yet to address the damage caused by chattel slavery on a widespread scale, there have been several efforts to even the playing field. In states like Oklahoma and California, Black residents are making strides when it comes to reparations. In fact, some folks have already received their checks!

America didn’t formally apologize for slavery until 2008– the same year former President Barack Obama was elected. The next major step towards justice for the descendants of slavery happened in response to the killing of George Floyd. The events triggered a wave of 2020 Black Lives Matter demonstrations and real legislation hoping to address the needs of the Black community, including that of reparations.

Now, we’re looking at the ongoing fight for proper payment and which cities are leading the charge to deliver it to their residents.

    Maryland

In May, Md. Gov. Wes Moore vetoed a measure to investigate the need for reparations in his state. According to the Democrat, it wasn’t an issue of needing reparations, but instead he urged lawmakers to support Black residents regardless, the Associated Press reported. “Now is the time to focus on the work itself: Narrowing the racial wealth gap, expanding homeownership, uplifting entrepreneurs of color, and closing the foundational disparities that lead to inequality — from food insecurity to education,” Moore wrote in his veto letter.

Fast forward to this month, the Maryland General Assembly moved to create a commission to study reparations for slavery, overriding Moore’s need for approval. “This topic isn’t easy, but, again, without formal study, reparations risk being dismissed as symbolic or unconstitutional, regardless of moral merit,” said Sen. Charles Sydnor, a Democrat.

    Decatur, Ga.

The city of Decatur, Ga., established a reparations task force in May. A resolution to address discrimination and the economic impact of slavery was first brought to the city’s attention last year in the Beacon Hill community. Now, the 11-member task force investigates Black property loss while also aiming to make policy recommendations to help Black residents recover from the generational issues of slavery. The task force has three years to produce a final report, Fox 5 News reported.

    Tusla, Okla.

Al Sharpton at a rally during commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre on June 01, 2021 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. President Biden stopped in Tulsa to commemorate the centennial of the Tulsa Race Massacre. May 31st of this year marks the centennial of when a white mob started looting, burning and murdering in Tulsa’s Greenwood neighborhood, then known as Black Wall Street, killing up to 300 people and displacing thousands more. Organizations and communities around Tulsa continue to honor and commemorate survivors and community residents. (Photo by Brandon Bell/Getty Images)

In an effort spurred by Tulsa’s first Black mayor Monroe Nichols, the city announced plans to give direct payments to the remaining survivors of the 1921 Tulsa massacre or their descendants, BBC reported. The plan is called Road to Repair. At the time, only two survivors from the racist terrorist attack on the Black Wall Street community were still living. The oldest survivor, Viola Ford Fletcher, died in Tulsa just last month. She was 111.

    California

Calif. Gov. Gavin Newsom has had a mixed record when it comes to reparations in his state. He signed five laws to advance reparations in October, but then vetoed five others, POLITICO reported. The California Reparations Task Force, which began in 2020, continues to find effective ways to get the governor’s attention.

“With any veto message, we need to go back and see if there’s a different way in which we can approach a solution to the problem,” San Diego Democratic Sen. Akilah Weber Pierson told California Matters. “A veto is never, in my opinion, a ‘no.’ It may be a ‘no, for now.’ It may be just a ‘no’ this year. And it may be a ‘no’ but let’s try something different.”

    Detroit

In 2021, voters in Detroit decided to form a city Reparations Task Force. Since then, the coalition has developed a report with many recommendations for proper reparations. Now, it’s up for lawmakers to decide on the appropriate– if any– legislation to address issues concerning housing, education, and economic discrepancies due to slavery.

    Chicago

Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson announced his plan to form a reparations task force ahead of the 2024 Juneteenth holiday. He called it “a pledge to shape the future of our city by confronting the legacy of inequity that has plagued Chicago for far too long.” But months slowly passed, and the task force had barely moved forward.

In April, however, Johnson’s office announced more details about the plan, including that applications to join the force were open, WTTW reported. They closed applications in May.

    Asheville, N.C.

Asheville’s Community Reparations Commission formed in 2022 after the city passed legislation supporting reparations in 2020, according to its website. But in September, the county’s board of commissioners received a letter from the Trump administration.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) told the North Carolina county to end its pursuit for reparations for its Black residents on the grounds of violating the Civil Rights Act, the Asheville Watch Dog reported. The task force stopped all meetings on June 30, 2024.

    Evanston, Ill.

In 2021, Evanston, Ill., became the first U.S. city to pass any reparations law. The law authorized cash payments to the descendants of enslaved people and used funding sourced solely from real estate taxes and cannabis sales. The historic plan faced scrutiny, especially from Republicans against legalizing marijuana and reparations for the Black community.

It’s not even the May lawsuit that’s slowing the city’s reparations program. In fact, Evanston’s Reparations Committee has delivered over $5 million in payments to more than 200 recipients. Low marijuana sales across the city are however threatening the program, according to The Daily Northwestern.

“If anyone thinks that we are on the committee, trying to prevent you from the distribution of funds, I want to deny that,” Carlis Sutton, a Reparations Committee member, said. “We’re doing everything on this committee to implement the program and get each payment today.”

    Boston

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu led the charge to form a reparations task force in the city of Boston. In February, Rep. Ayanna Pressley announced she would reintroduce legislation to study the impacts of slavery and suggest reparations, Boston Global reported.

“From Jim Crow, to red lining, to mass incarceration, our government through policies and budgets has perpetuated and entrenched these harms for generations. The disparities that we see in health outcomes, housing, education, wealth, and more are by design,” Pressley said. “It is not only about Black history, but it is about Black futures.”

    Tullahassee, Okla.

The tiny but mighty community of Tullahassee, Okla., is made up of about 115 people. Still, they joined the fight to win reparations for the town’s descendants of slavery in 2021. The town’s mayor recently joined Mayors Organized for Reparations and Equity– a national reparations effort, NPR reported.

According to The Daily Yonder, Black people were enslaved by local tribes. As generations went on, Tullahassee became a majority Black town– 69 percent to be exact. Tullahassee was also home to Flipper Davis College, a short-lived historically Black college (HBCU). It was founded by the AME Church in 1916 but closed by 1935.

In 2023, Mayor Quinton Lucas announced the Mayor’s Commission on Reparations was tasked to “study and make recommendations to the city on reparatory justice for past harm and discriminatory practices against Kansas City’s Black community,” according to the website. Lucas is one of only 11 mayors who pledged to pay reparations in 2021.

  • Trump Finally Responds to Federal Judge’s Ultimatum on SNAP Benefits

Trump Finally Responds to Federal Judge’s Ultimatum on SNAP Benefits

After two federal judges issued President Donald Trump an ultimatum regarding SNAP benefits, the Trump administration has finally put forth a plan to keep millions of Americans from starving… at least for now.

We previously told you millions went without SNAP benefits starting Nov. 1 after Congress failed to come to an agreement over funding. The pause to food assistance marked the first time in history SNAP had ever been cut off. Expectedly, Democrats, Republicans, human rights activists and federal judges pushed back against the president, who ultimately had the power to overturn this unprecedented issue.

Several states took legal action against the administration. In Massachusetts, Judge Indira Talwani ruled that the government is required to tap into emergency money for SNAP, even if it’s just making partial payments. She gave Trump until Monday (Nov. 3) to come up with a plan to make it happen.

In response to the judge’s ruling, Trump took to his social media app, Truth Social, saying he “instructed our lawyers to ask the Court to clarify how we can legally fund SNAP as soon as possible.” He went on to blame Democrats for the shutdown: “If we are given the appropriate legal direction by the Court, it will BE MY HONOR to provide the funding, just like I did with Military and Law Enforcement Pay,” he wrote

The administration told a federal court in accordance with the Monday deadline that it will partially pay out SNAP benefits to the nearly 42 million Americans on the program. He only promised to fund assistance only during the month of November, according to the court filing. SNAP recipients are now set to receive 50 percent of what they normally would under the president’s new court order.

Under past government shutdowns, emergency money has always been used to provide food assistance for Americans. The Trump administration previously argued that money in the $5 billion contingency fund could not be used for SNAP. But after another judge in Rhode Island pushed back against Trump’s claims about funding, the administration drastically changed its tune.

In a separate lawsuit, Judge John J. McConnell, Jr. ruled in favor of Democracy Forward, the organization which requested a temporary restraining order in light of the pause to benefits, CBS News reported. On Saturday (Nov. 1), McConnell gave Trump the same Monday deadline to figure out a way to use contingency funds for SNAP. Both McConnell and Talwani ruled it’s up to the Trump administration to decide exactly how much money will be distributed.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees SNAP, sent out a memo last week declaring “the well has run dry.” For over a month, Congress has been at a stand still regarding federal funding. Democrats want Republicans to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies for Americans; Republicans want the government to open up before any negotiations can be made.

“Right now, the problem is everybody wants to win,” W.V. Sen. Jim Justice said of the current debacle. “And you’ve got a lot of people really hurting, and that really upsets me,” the Republican continued.

All the Show-Stopping Black Celebs’ Fashions at the 2025 LACMA Art + Film Red Carpet

While most people were outside still celebrating Halloween on Saturday (Nov.1), a handful of Black stars and celebrities gathered in Los Angeles to celebrate at the 2025 LACMA Art + Film Gala, honoring movie director Ryan Coogler.

The 14th annual event, put on by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, highlights creatives whose work has reshaped their respective fields. Given the massive success of Coogler’s movie “Sinners,” it was only fitting that Coogler be one of this year’s honorees alongside painter and artist Mary Corse.

During his acceptance speech, Coogler beautifully reflected on his journey in filmmaking, finding community in Los Angeles, and making beautiful art while “existing in that zone of art, utility and commerce” as a Black person in America.

But seeing as how this event is one of L.A.’s most prestigious galas and was presented in partnership with Gucci, you already know some of our favorite Black stars showed up and showed out on the red carpet! Quick Weaves

Bundles can be expensive, and if you’re ballin on a budget, a quick weave is a style you could consider. Quick weaves are cheaper, versatile and chic.

Pixie cuts are fabulous, and it’s common for them to be slicked down after hours of moulding and texturizing. And while that does look good, finger coiling your pixie is just as elegant and something you can do from home in half the time.

    Silk Presses

It is silk press season, but sometimes silk presses don’t last as long as you would want them to. However, they can easily be brought back to life with some dry shampoo and a quick run over with some straighteners.

    Shape Ups

It’s not always worth going to the barber for something you can do from the comfort of your home. These are some tips to follow so that you can start doing your own shape ups.

  • Black America Responds to the Government Shutdown…and Whew!

Black America Responds to the Government Shutdown…and Whew!

If you woke up this morning hoping that the government shutdown was just a bad dream, think again. As of Wednesday (Oct. 1), the government has officially closed its doors, which means that the money flow has stopped for certain federal agencies.

As President Donald Trump and the Democrats duke it out over healthcare funding — among other things — Black Americans who stand to endure the worst effects of the shutdown are sounding off on social media about how it all will impact their pockets.

“Omg, the government is shut down! Time to dial it in on our finances. SMH,” one person wrote on X

The shutdown threatens layoffs, service cuts and a major blow to Medicaid and Medicare, all thanks to staffing shortages. Food assistance programs like the Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children are looking at empty coffers real soon, according to The New York T and BBC. For Black folks, it’s the same old song and dance.

“Every day it’s something,” posted one user on X, in reponse to the news.

“I knew the sequel (Donald Trump’s second term as president) would be even more chaotic,” responded another.

Congressional candidate Isaiah Martin called it Donald Trump’s shutdown: “Trump controls all three branches of government! THIS IS HIS SHUTDOWN”

Former Vice President Kamala Harris shared similar sentiments as she posted that it was Republican Congressmembers who caused the shutdown:

“President Trump and Congressional Republicans just shut down the government because they refused to stop your health care costs from rising,” Harris told her followers. “This is their shutdown.”

This shutdown is the second government shutdown to happen under Donald Trump, with the first being in December of 2018, which one X user pointed out was the longest shutdown in U.S. history:

“Fun fact: The longest shutdown in U.S. history lasted 35 days, from December 22, 2018, to January 25, 2019, during President Donald Trump’s administration.”

While chaos ensues, folks are also thinking about those who will be most impacted:

“Sending love and support to anyone impacted by the government shutdown.”

Sara Gonzales, a host for Blaze TV, an American conservative media company founded in 2018 with strong conservative views, crashed the Aug. 14 event as Crockett was speaking about her grandmother. Gonzales can be seen in a video she uploaded on X interrupting Crockett, shouting out, “Jasmine! The people of Dallas deserve better than a fake ghetto hood rat.” The Democratic lawmaker looked over at her and smirked before the crowd erupted in boos.

“No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,” Crockett could be heard saying. “Listen, listen, listen, listen, listen.” Gonzales doubled down on her insults, asking, “Do they know you’re a rich kid from Missouri?”

She asked a second time, “Do your people know you’re a spoiled rich kid from Missouri?,” referencing how Crockett is from St. Louis and moved to Texas for law school.

One woman screamed at Gonzales, “Get your ass out of here!” while one man told her to, “Get out! Get out!” as she was escorted out by security. And she didn’t leave silently. “Don’t touch me! Get her off me!” Gonzales responded. “Get off me! Get the f*ck off me!”

She even asked officers, “Are you proud?” as she was forced to leave the town hall. Gonzales was told by police to leave the property, and threatened to place her in handcuffs if she did not comply with their orders to leave. But wait, there’s more.

A white woman who goes by “blonde conservative” online also confronted Crockett at the same event. She posted video of her own interaction of when she asked Crockett, “Why do you hate white people? Why are you racist towards white people? Why are you racist towards white people?”

She willing left after someone off-camera told her she needed to skedaddle, too.

Crockett, who was speaking at the Dallas County Blue Texas Organizing Rally to urge her supporters to turn Texas blue to defeat the GOP in the 2026 midterm elections, according to Dallas Weekly, responded to the haters.

“Listen, this is part of the problem,” Crockett said in the video. “This is part of the problem. I want y’all to be part of the solution. We’re going to show these people that ignorance will not win today.”

  • Whoopi Goldberg Claps Hard at Barack Obama, You Won’t Believe What She Says About Him

Whoopi Goldberg Claps Hard at Barack Obama, You Won’t Believe What She Says About Him

Whoopi Goldberg isn’t really feeling former President Barack Obama right now. And now, she’s using her biggest platform to express why.

Goldberg shared her harsh words for Obama on Tuesday’s episode of “The View.” Her words were prompted by comments he made at a private fundraiser in New Jersey over the weekend where he accused Democrats of “whining” about Trump and all of his bad decisions. He also said that they need to change their messaging, stop looking for a “Messiah,” do a little less “navel-gazing” and “toughen up.”

She also mentioned an interview with “Shark Tank” entrepreneur and billionaire Mark Cuban who echoed similar sentiments as the president and decided to call both men out and explain the error in their messaging.

“Let me remind everybody who was out on the front lines marching, when we had the giant marches that went on. It was the people. The people went out. They were not navel-gazing, it was older people who were saying, ‘Why are you touching my social security?’” Goldberg said in response to the comments. “It was not people whining, it was about people saying, ‘Why are you taking these rights away from my child when my child was born here?’”

She later added: “This has not been about Democrats laying back. This has been about y’all. This has been about y’all because their [Democrats] messaging has always been the same. Democrats have been angry at what this man tried to do the last time, they’ve been angry this time. With much due respect to you both, you are pointing the finger to the wrong person when you say Democrats.”

Goldberg later expressed that folks like Obama and Cuban need to change their vantage point and realize that Democratic voters and the people who support their ideologies have been doing much more than just complaining about Trump. She also noted that the only people who need to switch up what they’re saying are folks like Obama and Cuban, and not those who’ve been on the front lines speaking out and showing up for the cause.

Neither Obama nor Cuban have responded to Goldberg’s comments. Check out the conversation below.
