Shannon Tavarez, an 11-year-old actress in Broadway's The Lion King, has been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. The young girl from Queens, N.Y., who got her lucky break by landing the prime role in her first professional audition, came down with a low-grade fever and sniffles just six months into her run. She is in need of a bone marrow transplant. Tavarez is African American and Hispanic, two groups that are underrepresented in bone marrow donations. DKMS America is having a bone marrow drive for Shannon on Sunday at St. Malachys - the Actor's Chapel in the Theater District. Keeping her in our prayers.
