The university has announced that it may revisit the decision to keep the name of the residential college, which was named after 19th-century alumnus John C. Calhoun, a known and ardent supporter of slavery, the Associated Press reports.

Originally, despite students’ protests against the name of the college, university President Peter Salovey had said in April that the name of Calhoun College would remain.

However, on Monday, Salovey changed his tune, announcing to the campus community that he had appointed a new committee “to develop guidelines for proposal to remove historical names from university buildings or spaces,” the newswire notes.

He added that requests to remove the name from the college will be reconsidered after the committee has completed its work.
