The cast of Underground has to come to work every day knowing they’re about to portray slaves whose main goal in life is freedom for themselves and their families. That is no simple task, even for the best of actors.

“We’re not only looking for freedom in Underground; we are still looking for freedom,” said actress Aisha Hinds. Hinds is debuting her character, the legendary Harriet Tubman, in season 2 of Underground on March 8.

It’s 2017, and while slavery is over, many black people don’t feel the freedom we were supposedly granted. The Root asked the cast of Underground to define freedom and to share a time when they felt the most free.
