Actress Tiffany Boone gets satisfaction from showing the humanity of Chicagoans.

“I think people think of Chicago as a super-dangerous place. These are human beings. Nobody wants to kill someone just to kill someone,” the up-and-coming actress told The Root.

Boone plays Jerrika, a natural-hair beauty from the “right” side of the tracks, in Lena Waithe’s The Chi. The Baltimore native believes that the series demonstrates black joy—in fact, it is black joy that sets the series apart.

“Black people are some of the most joyful people you’ll see in the worst situations,” Boone explains. “No matter our circumstances, we’ve been forced to find joy in the worst situations since slavery.” Check out the video above.

The Chi airs on Sundays at 10 p.m. EST on Showtime.
