Watch: Take a Page From Toya Wright's Book

Author and TV personality Toya Wright

TV personality and New York Times best-selling author Toya Wright wants to introduce you to "Toya." And her memoir, In My Own Words, does just that.

Be clear: The independently published book isn’t about "Toya Wright," the reality-TV star, the public figure—it’s about a mother, daughter, sister and a wife. In My Own Words is an authentic account of a woman brave enough to unearth some of her most intimate moments, including coping with the shooting deaths of her two brothers, Rudy and Josh. “I just felt like if I was to open up and write a book, I was going to open up,” Wright tells The Root for Food for Thought, a video series celebrating the ingenuity and accomplishments of celebrities and influencers of the African Diaspora.

The writing process was cathartic for Wright—each page that she penned was a release, she says, and it took the 32-year-old less than three months to complete her memoir. But healing is a process, and though not completely healed, Wright says she's ready to share her story with the world.

We sat down with Toya Wright—a woman of silent strength—to discuss love and loss and to share some “food for thought.”
