Video of a Beaumont, Texas, high school teacher repeatedly slapping a student and calling him an “idiot ass” went viral and has led to the woman’s arrest, authorities say.

According to NBC News, a nine-second video posted on Twitter appears to show Ozen High School teacher Mary Hastings hitting a student some five times while yelling at him about disturbing class. At one point, Hastings can be heard calling the student an “idiot ass.” She also appears to mock the student after he begins to cry.
Hastings, 63, was arrested Friday and charged with assault. She was released on bail, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, NBC News reports.
Hastings, who could not be reached by NBC News for comment, has been placed on administrative leave. The school district said in a statement viewed by the news station that it does not condone and won’t tolerate employees’ abuse of a child.
