Simmons, 66, reduced rap to โ€œtalkingโ€ in aย recent Rolling Stone interview: โ€œIโ€™m looking forward to music coming back to lyrics and melody, instead of just talking,โ€ he said. โ€œA song, as far as Iโ€™m concerned, is by definition lyric and melody โ€ฆ or just melody.โ€

Kweli apparently caught wind of the interview:

In the interview, Simmons went on to question the validity of inducting icons like Grandmaster Flash and Run-DMC into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and said he looked forward to โ€œthe death of rap.โ€

Kweli summarily came for Simmonsโ€™ head by asking if maybe someone could say the same of Simmons.

โ€œHip-hop has saved countless lives. How dare he wish it dead,โ€ Kweli asked. And then: โ€œSo would it be fair to wish him dead, or nah?โ€

The former Black Star rapper and activist went toe-to-toe with Kiss fans this weekend and compared the 40-year-old bandโ€”known more for its look than its musicโ€”to โ€œmarketing.โ€

As this thing went back and forth, Kweli responded to Kiss fans and took no tea for the fever.ย

The New York Daily News reports that Simmons responded to the backlash this weekend and cleaned up his comments โ€ฆ kinda.

โ€œApparently pointing out that everything is cyclicalโ€”even musicโ€”is โ€˜controversial,โ€™โ€ he tweeted Friday. โ€œPeople are very easily offended.โ€

โ€œPointing out everything is โ€˜cyclicalโ€™ is different than โ€˜looking forwardโ€™ to things dying,โ€ Kweli fired back. โ€œDo better Gene.โ€

โ€œThat doesnโ€™t mean those arenโ€™t good artists. But they donโ€™t play guitar. They sample and they talk. Not even sing,โ€ Simmons responded. โ€œRap will die. Next year, 10 years from now, at some point, and then something else will come along. And all that is good and healthy.โ€
