We’re living in a do-it-yourself culture, and there’s no one more DIY than bloggers. Blogging is a means of communication, self-expression, culture, news and so much more. And the people who create blogs are typically ridiculously talented and effortlessly wear the responsibility of being a voice for their culture.

Bloggers are inspiring, to say the least. And many black bloggers have inspired us here at The Root with their journeys to success. So we’ve launched a new video series—Started From the Blog, Now We’re Here—a straight-from-the-bloggers’-mouth account of how their blog helped them excel in their careers.
First up was The Root’s managing editor, Danielle Belton, and then we shone a spotlight on the already-lit 2016 The Root 100 honoree Luvvie Ajayi. And now it’s Rae Holliday’s turn!
Holliday’s first job was working as a security guard for American Express, and he credits that gig with teaching him how to be a sarcastic genius because of the rude people he encountered on a daily basis. It’s that sharp wit that helped him create his voice online, through his blog, Stuff Fly People Like.
Rae used his voice to celebrate those who didn’t have a voice, and he continues to do so as his blog’s popularity helped him land his current gig at Interactive One, now known as iOne Digital. This is his story.
