According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, junior Christopher Starks, 22, was shot during an altercation inside the school's Student Union building. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The newspaper notes that shortly after the shooting, the school's campus was placed on a lockdown as police searched for the suspect. No information about the suspect has been released as of this time, and according to reports, the lockdown was lifted around midnight.

"It is with great sadness that we report the loss of a Savannah State University student," a statement posted on the school's website said. " โ€ฆ Mr. Starks was the only individual transported to a medical facility following the incident. So far, no arrests have been made."

Yahoo! News reports that since the HBCU is a state school, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation will work alongside campus police to investigate the incident.

University officials told the Journal-Constitution that Friday-morning classes would be delayed until 10 a.m. and added that grief counselors would be made available on campus. A vigil would be held on campus at noon, the newspaper reports.

Savannah State is the oldest HBCU in Georgia.
