"I don't know whose idea it was, but we decided to kill ourselves because it was so horrendous what was happening," Ruth Madoff says in part to Safer.

Before making the suicide pact, Ms. Madoff mailed a sentimental package of jewelry and other items to their son Andrew.

"We took pills and woke up the next dayโ€ฆ.It was very impulsive and I am glad we woke up," she says.
