The news quickly spread, prompting everyone to pour out their love and thoughts and prayers for the singer.

And because game recognizes game, and royalty recognizes royalty, it only made sense that Beyoncé and Jay-Z would dedicate their performance from the On The Run II tour in Detroit, the icon’s hometown, to the living legend herself.

“This show is dedicated to Aretha Franklin,” Beyoncé reportedly said as she opened the show at Ford Field. “We love you and thank you.”

DJ Khaled, who was opening for Bey and Jay, also played one of Aretha’s hits, “Respect,” to the crowd’s delight.

“Make some noise for Aretha Franklin!” the producer told the crowd who cheered.
