Beck went on to explain his displeasure with the term, which centered around African-American not being a race and a label wrought with contradiction. He and his co-host pointed out that South African actress Charlize Theron, who recently became a US citizen cannot be considered African-American. While he obviously struggles to understand the concept of an ethnic group, “African-American” is something of a complicated term.
