Jumping off his experience working to make Obamacare a reality, he told the audience, โOne of the things I do worry about sometimes among progressives in the United States ... is a certain kind of rigidity where we say, โIโm sorry, this is how itโs going to be,โ and then we start sometimes creating whatโs called a circular firing squad, where you start shooting at your allies because one of them is straying from purity on the issues. And when that happens, typically the overall effort and movement weakens.โ
The 44th president urged the audience to allow for more flexibility in finding routes to success. โI think, whether you are speaking as a citizen or as a political leader or as an organizer ... you have to recognize that the way weโve structured democracy requires you to take into account people who donโt agree with you, and that by definition means youโre not going to get 100 percent of what you want.โ
The former community organizer, however, also reminded his listeners how important it is to know what you stand for: โBut you should take some time to think in your own mind, โWhat are my core principles?โ because โฆ if you donโt know what your principles are, thatโs when you compromise your principles away. ... You canโt set up a system in which you donโt compromise on anything, but you also canโt operate in a system where you compromise on everything.โ
