On Thursday, Putin offered Comey political asylum.
“If Comey will be under the threat of political persecution, we are ready to accept him here,” the Russian president said at a press conference, according to Russian state media outlet TASS.
Comey testified that Trump pressured him to “let go” of the FBI investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s Russian ties, The Hill reports. Comey also acknowledged leaking memos of conversations he had with the president in hopes of launching an investigation into Trump’s actions.
During Putin’s press conference, he compared Comey to Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency leaker who was granted asylum by Russia.
“This is strange. How, then, is the director of the FBI any different from Snowden? He is not a head of the special services, but a human rights activist,” Putin said.
Should Comey accept asylum in Russia, I see an R&B/emo/soft-core rap/metal band on the horizon.
