In the past year, numerous unarmed black men, women and children have lost their lives as a result of police brutality, increasing tensions around the country to volatile levels and exposing a festering wound that has yet to heal. Now PBS NewsHour has launched a yearlong series aimed at tackling diversity, the divisions that have seemingly torn the nation apart and what can be done to bridge those divides, according to PBS.

The series, called Race Matters, will feature experts on race relations and will be led by renowned journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault as special correspondent, who will take viewers across the nation to have these difficult but necessary conversations.ย
"I am so pleased that a program with such gravitas as theย PBS NewsHour is paying serious attention to America's most enduring challenge: racism. My conversations focusing on solutions come at a time ofย growing concern raised by disturbing events in places like Charleston, Ferguson, Baltimore and New York over the past year," Hunter-Gault told The Root. "It is my hope that these conversations will lead to greater understanding and narrowing of the racial divide."
Tuesday's broadcast will feature Harvard University visiting professor Raj Chetty, who will be speaking about his research into race and community.
"We hear a lot about racism during these challenging times," Hunter-Gault said. "But rarely do we hear any solutions. I hope my conversations on theย PBS NewsHour will provide some solutions to this, America's most enduring problem."
