For this exhibit, Thomas brought together 90 of her most recent works, including a film about her mother, a mural, mixed-media portraits and installations of furnished domestic interiors. She visually articulates black female beauty and sexual identity using rhinestones, colorful acrylic embellishments and collage-inspired methods. Her pieces are a combination of portraiture, landscapes, female nude and still life, with 1970s-inspired settings.

“Origin of the Universe” will run from Sept. 28, 2012, to Jan. 20, 2013, in the museum’s fourth-floor Morris A. and Meyer Schapiro Wing.
