According to the Associated Press, LePage made the comments Thursday morning on WGAN-AM when asked for his reaction to the violent white supremacist rallies in Charlottesville, Va.

โ€œWhether we like it or not, this is what our history is, and to me itโ€™s just like going to New York City right now and taking down the monument of those who perished in 9/11,โ€ LePage said. โ€œIt will come to that.โ€

LePage argued that those who support the removal of a statue of Confederate Civil War Gen. Robert E Lee โ€œdonโ€™t even know the history of this country and they are trying to take monuments down.โ€

LePageโ€”who said he didnโ€™t hear about all the violence until Tuesday because he doesnโ€™t watch TV or read newspapers (???)โ€”did condemn the Ku Klux Klan and its supporters, but then went on to echo some of President Donald Trumpโ€™s rhetoric, saying that both sides are โ€œequally as bad,โ€ including those who were demanding the removal of the Lee statue.

โ€œI think what they are standing for is equally as bad; they are trying to erase history,โ€ LePage told WGAN. โ€œHow can future generations learn if we are going to erase history? Thatโ€™s disgusting.โ€
