According to reports, a member of Nyong’o’s team called the Los Angeles Police Department to report the dress missing from her hotel room. In an interview with The Guardian, Police Sgt. Richard Bowman said that there were no suspects but that police were looking to see if the theft had been captured on camera.

During the Oscars red-carpet event, Nyong’o told the Associated Press that she wore the dress in homage to Prince’s song “Diamonds and Pearls” as well as to the sea, since it was designed with a fluid look in mind. It took 25 people 10 weeks to make the dress by hand.
