Here’s Another Recession Indicator That Black Folks Say Isn’t All Bad

Black unemployment is rising and folks are looking for ways to cut expenses, but many say one discount grocery store is coming to the rescue.

Although we haven’t gotten the official word that we’re actually in a recession, all of the signs are there. As Black unemployment is rising, people are looking to cut everything from their beauty budgets to how much they spend at the drive-thru amid a rise in fast food value meal options.

One of the places Americans are feeling rising prices the most is at the grocery store. According to an Associated Press-Norc poll, 53 percent of respondents said grocery costs were a major source of stress. As more and more Americans are looking for ways to cut their grocery bills, they have been turning to discount grocery chains like Aldi to do their weekly shop. In February, the German-owned chain announced a five-year national growth strategy that includes plans to open more than 225 new stores in 2025, the most new U.S. stores in one year in 50 years.

But for Black people, Aldi is nothing new. We’ve been keeping quarters and reusable shopping bags on us for years, just in case we have to get ourselves a cart and go shopping. Here are just a few of the reasons why Black people love Aldi.

Your Weekly Shopping Trip Won’t Blow Your Budget

Aldi is known for having exceptionally low prices, partly due to the fact that more than 80 percent of its inventory comes from private label brands, similar to Trader Joe’s. Necc showed off her $100 Aldi’s haul on TikTok, which included bagels, eggs, fresh produce, rice and lunchmeat.

“$100 for all that?! Let me go to ALDIs real quick!” wrote someone in the comments.

TikTok user @piecesofkeyana agrees and won’t tolerate anyone talking trash about Aldi. She calls it her go-to for her kid’s snacks, including juice boxes, applesauce packages and crackers.

The Bougie Save-A-Lot

But don’t get it twisted, low prices doesn’t mean low quality. In fact, Aldi has plenty of healthy products, including organic and meatless options. Quezzzz called Aldi “the bougie Save-a-Lot,” and tells his followers not to sleep on the value.

“We all know why we’re here. We’re here to save a little bit of money, but in a fancy way,” he said.

But he does have one complaint about his local store – there aren’t enough open registers.

“We do have to do something about the cashier situation. There shouldn’t be one cashier and 89 people in line,” he said.

And There’s Wine

Aldi isn’t just known for their deals on food. Experienced shoppers know it’s also an underrated destination for deals on wine and other alcoholic beverages. They even have vegan friendly options available.

Jessi told her TikTok followers to run to Aldi where she was able to get four bottles of wine for less than $25. Just be careful, some fans say the wine is so good, you almost forget there’s alcohol involved.

“The pacific fruit wines are soo good I got apple and it’s tastes like apple juice with a nice lil kick to it 😩,” wrote someone in the comments.
