In April 1999, the catchy song about deadbeats who ride shotgun reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, where it remained for four weeks. But the song has aged well, and as Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas points out in a solo oral history in Esquire magazine, many men still proclaim to her that they aren’t the type of guy she and fellow group members T-Boz and Left Eye were talking about.

“The only thing I got tired of was guys telling me they weren’t scrubs,” she said. “Even to this day, all these years later, I can run into a fan who will say he’s not a scrub. I’m like, ‘Wow, OK.’ “

Other interesting facts she reveals include the song’s writer, who is none other than current Real Housewives of Atlanta star, and former Xscape member, Kandi Burruss.
