We are a people deeply steeped in the tradition of protest. And in Charlotte, N.C., unrest continues for the third day—a direct response to the fatal shooting by police of two black men: Keith Lamont Scott, a disabled man shot in Charlotte while reportedly reading in his car, and Terence Crutcher, shot near his stalled car in Tulsa, Okla.

The reality is that blacks in America are feared, killed and then vilified—in that order. The public is made more and more aware of this rampant racism through social media and the sharing and resharing of images showing authority figures killing black men and women. And the people of Charlotte are hurt, tired, weary and just fed up.

Here are 10 photos that capture the protests in response to the most recent police killings of black men.
