When she asked him what cabinet position he might like, he clarified that she was speaking hypothetically and then said, "Department of Defense." Given his well-known difficulty mastering knowledge of world affairs, we don't think his assurance that he's been doing his homework in recent months made this aspiration seem any more reasonable.

A visibly surprised Walters exclaimed, โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œNot Treasury? I mean, youโ€™re the 9-9-9 man. Why the Department of Defense?โ€ Walters asked.

โ€œBecause if I could influence rebuilding our military as it should be, that would be a task I would consider undertaking.โ€

Walters proceeded to remind Cain, who served in the Department of the Navy during the Vietnam War, that as defense secretary, โ€œit would be important to be familiar with the various countries around the world.โ€

โ€œAnd you have had some difficulty with that, Mr. Cain,โ€ she added.

โ€œYes, but I have been doing my homework ever since that difficulty,โ€ Cain said, still smiling.
