โThis is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for, given our profound disagreements with the Republican ticket on a whole host of issues,โ the joint statement reads. โBut living in a democracy is about recognizing that our point of view wonโt always win out, and being willing to accept the peaceful transfer of power.โ
The Obamas once again chose to โgo highโ in their message, but considering how low Republicans have gone (Trump still hasnโt admitted he lost the 2020 presidential election), folks are wondering: did the esteemed couple need to take the high road?
One user, @mnyomb1, believes that the Obamasโ efforts were in vain. โThank you Mr. President for standing up for democracy they wonโt appreciate you. But we GenZ appreciated your effort in Kamala Harris Campaign,โ they wrote.
However, another personality on X insisted that the statement from the former first couple isnโt enough. โI canโt find the part in the statement where you actually congratulate Trump,โ @adrian_wamp lamented.
Another X user, @AbrahamSte17914, believes that Barack and Michelle Obama have done enough for this country and deserve a break. โThank you for acknowledging and congratulating President - Elect Donald Trump but for you is high time you go and rest like many other former US Presidents...โ
On Instagram, Barackโs post where he shared the joint remarks was flooded with positivity. One commenter, @cherae.lynn, wrote: โ*sigh* Iโm saying thoughโฆcan you be the first president to have three terms?โ
However, @thecoreyshow insisted: โWhy are we always being the bigger person. Trump should be in jail. Itโs time for the party to match their energy.โ
The Obamasโ statement came just before Vice President Kamala Harrisโs concession speech from Howard University in Washington, D.C.
โWhile I concede this election. I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign,โ Harris said. โI will never give up a fight for a future where Americans can pursue their dreams ambitions and aspirations.โ
