Over the weekend, the music world mourned Chuck Berry, the father of rock ’n’ roll, after the music legend died at the age of 90.

Obama noted that Berry “rolled over everyone who came before him—and turned up everyone who came after.”

During a phone call with my grandmother, she told the story about the time she attended a concert in New Orleans and was brought onstage to hold Berry’s guitar while he was playing it. At the end of the song, he took off a ring and gave it to her. She still has that ring, and I’m sure that now that she’s 88 and her favorite musician has died, it means more to her than ever.
