EURweb is reporting that Grammy Award-winning singer Alicia Keys spoke with Essence magazine about her marriage to Swizz Beatz, which has earned her the title of "homewrecker" in the eyes of some. She said that she didn't want to claim that kind of fame because it wasn't true. "We didn't start seeing each other until months after they had separated," Keys told Essence. "I was aware of all the false things that were being said about me, and it definitely hurt."
Beatz's then-wife, Mashonda, who had recently given birth to the couple's child, publicly announced that Keys was breaking up a marriage that she was trying to save. Keys never addressed the public declarations. "I was sure that if I engaged, it would become back-and-forth like some sick entertainment, which goes against everything I believe and would have made things worse."
We're not really sure why she's addressing the issue now, but who really is going to believe that she played no role in the breakup of the marriage? Separated is not divorced. So who is she trying to convince — us or herself?
Call us crazy, but a jilted wife would probably still think she's married, since she is in fact legally still married. Keys getting pregnant by Beatz before the divorce was finalized might have made Mashonda a little crazy. Getting married to Beatz just days after the divorce was finalized could cause some static. Keys needs to understand that you can't always have everything — the man and the wife's blessing and silence.
Whatever the case, it's good that the ladies are putting aside their differences for the sake of the children. It's ironic how the man in the middle always seems to be able to escape blame or critique in these types of situations, especially when he is the common denominator. Keys should let sleeping dogs lie, pun intended, and keep moving forward, because the public sure has.
