When it comes to the holiday season, Mariah Carey has Christmas on lock. While some people are still trying to scrape the last of the Halloween spider webs off of their doorsteps, others have already been bumping the self-proclaimed Queen of Christmas’s anthem, “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”

But now, a new collab with Sephora has some giving Carey the side eye, saying the Queen and the makeup retail giant are out of touch with what everyday Americans are facing right now.
On Nov. 1, Carey posted a clip of a partnership spot she made with Sephora. In the video, Carey catches an elf who has stolen her Sephora makeup. The thief tells the “Emotions” signer that he and the rest of the elves are striking after going through “holiday hell,” and he needs the money he’d make from selling Carey’s makeup collection to pay for “elf therapy.”
“Christmas is cancelled. No bells, no cheer, no glam,” the elf tells Carey in the clip.
The ad ends with Carey turning the elf into a snowman, hitting her epic high note and belting out her Christmas hit as she rides in a sleigh delivering Sephora products.
As beloved as Carey is this time of year, some people are not feeling the ad. They feel that in the current climate which has seen rising costs and massive layoffs, Carey and Sephora are playing in our faces.
“That Mariah Carey sephora ad is mocking us btw. It’s so disgusting,” wrote an X user.
Others are encouraging the rest of us to keep our hard-earned coins this holiday season.
“That Sephora commercial with Mariah Carey where the elf cancels Christmas is so tone deaf. Yall better stay home Black Friday and yall better not be shopping online either,” wrote someone on X.
But not everyone is up in arms. In fact, some aren’t sure what all of the fuss is about.
“Either I’m just really dumb or y’all too work because I did not analyze nor catch the subtle message in the new Mariah Carey Sephora Christmas ad. I also never got the message in the Sydney Sweeney American Eagle ad either….” wrote someone on X.
