"We received information that the suspect had won $500 on a Texas lottery scratch-off ticket and that the victim wanted half of the proceeds," homicide Sgt. Joe Loughman told the newspaper. "The suspect didn't want to share it with her."

According to the Star-Telegram, Laurice Hampton, 48, was suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest when she called 911 around 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

"She told them that she had been shot and that he had shot himself after he shot her," Loughman said.

When officers arrived, they found the couple in the master bedroom. Terry Martin, 46, "was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Hampton was taken by ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital and died a few hours later," according to the Star-Telegram.

Loughman noted that the couple had lived together for several years but had known each other since childhood and were said to have had a "very volatile relationship."
