The man, who became the first person to be diagnosed on U.S. soil with Ebola, had traveled from Liberia to Dallas to visit family when he began exhibiting symptoms.

According to CBS News, brincidofovir is an oral antiviral drug that is in the process of being tested to fight other, more common viruses. However, there is hope that it might target Ebola.

Physicians reportedly requested federal permission to administer the drug, which was made by the North Carolina-based company Chimerix Inc., according to CBS News.
