Jacqueline Alexander allegedly punched her son in the face around 11 p.m. on Tuesday after accusing him of being effeminate.

“No, that’s not right. I mean that’s her flesh and blood, her son,” a neighbor, Tamika Heard, told the news station after hearing about the incident. “No, that’s not right.”

“It’s shocking every time it happens, but it’s not new to us at the center,” Will Batts, who runs the Memphis Gay and Lesbian Center, added. “We hear a lot of stories about people who are assaulted by family members. Young people who are kicked out of their houses when they come out to a parent.”

It is not clear how old the son is, but officers recorded several bruises on his face. Alexander is being held on a $1,000 bond.
