Michael Steele is officially out as chairman of the Republican National Committee. Steele, who had been under fire in his party for a number of high-profile gaffes throughout the tenure of his office, dropped out of the running for a second term after the fourth round of balloting. Upon learning of the results, Steele bowed out of the race, throwing his support behind Maria Cino, a longtime GOP operative. The race is now between Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus and Cino. The first person to reach 85 votes will be the next chair of the RNC.
Steele noted that the party is clearly ready for a new direction. That's an understatement. The Republican Party had been rolling out possible contenders on a monthly basis over the the last year. How ironic is it that the man who campaigned to "Fire Pelosi" is out of a job? Some would call that karma. We'll just call it politics.
