According to The Wrap, Daniels said the series will be about a white woman named Star who creates a singing group with two black women. Latifah’s character is the owner of a salon who mentors the women in the group.

“Star is white and she is thrust into a world of blackness,” Daniels told reporters during this summer’s Television Critics Association press conference. He added, “She has a sister who is half-black, Simone, and she has a best friend who is black, and they move to Atlanta to form a girls group.”

When asked about his inspiration for the series, Daniels listed about every major group out there. Past and present.

“It’s based on LaBelle, it’s based on the Supremes, it’s based on TLC, it’s based on Destiny’s Child. Same sort of inspirations, same sort of template when we created Empire,” Daniels stated.
