‘Push It’ Pumped so ‘WAP’ Could Hump, so Let’s Talk About How Salt-N-Pepa Were Almost Arrested for Vulgarity

Honoring Megan Thee Stallion at Glamour's 2021 Women of the Year Awards, Sandra 'Pepa' Denton recounted how her group's breakthrough hit was targeted by police.

It would be an understatement to say the hip-hop classic โ€œPush It,โ€ best known as the breakthrough single that pushed Salt-N-Pepa to the top of the charts in 1987, was ahead of its time. But the pioneering and enduring impact of the all-female rap group fronted by Sandra โ€œPepaโ€ Denton and Cheryl โ€œSaltโ€ James was made abundantly clear on Sunday night in New York City; on hand to honor โ€œWAPโ€ co-collaborator Megan Thee Stallion at Glamourโ€™s 2021 Women of the Year Awards, Denton shared an anecdote about the single, which attracted not only a massive fanbase but the attention of the literal morality police.

โ€œThey said if you say a curse word, weโ€™re going to take you off the stage,โ€ Denton told Page Six at the event, which โ€œwas held in compliance with local health and safety guidelines,โ€ according to Glamour. โ€œWe were saying โ€˜Push It;โ€™ they thought we were saying, โ€˜[Pussy], real good.โ€™ So the police were waiting for us. We had to show them the lyrics: Weโ€™re saying โ€˜PUSH Itโ€™ not [pussy].โ€

Of course, the rub here is that โ€œpussy real goodโ€ was the very overt message of the bopโ€”I mean, โ€œWAPโ€โ€”of Summer 2020, no?

More from Page Six:

Denton, 55, who was on hand to present Megan Thee Stallion with an award, also marveled at how much hip-hop has changed for women since she rapped the now-chaste 1990 song โ€œLetโ€™s Talk About Sex.โ€

โ€œI was just trying to educate,โ€ she marveled. โ€œTo teach about the doโ€™s and the donโ€™tโ€™s. Thatโ€™s nothing now! Itโ€™s amazing to see how everything has evolved and women are bossing up and taking care of their own business and heading their own empire. Itโ€™s a beautiful thing, especially these women in hip-hop because it was such a male-dominated field.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s important to see that strength and know your worth,โ€ she added.

Of course, as the lucky beneficiary of that pioneering spirit, Megan echoed that message as she reflected on her own evolutionโ€”as both a โ€œhot girlโ€ and hip-hop phenomenon with an equally sex-positive and feminist platform.

โ€œThe bigger my platform gets, I start realizing that Iโ€™m not the only woman that goes through what I go through,โ€ she told Glamour. โ€œI want to bring things to light so other women donโ€™t feel like they have to continue to be silent.โ€

Megโ€™s speech was reportedly full of tributes to women; most importantly, her mother, the late rapper Holly โ€œHolly-woodโ€ Thomas, who died just as her daughter was garnering major acclaim in March 2019.

โ€œI want to thank my mom because she taught me how to be the woman that I am today. Sheโ€™s my best friend, my manager, she was my everything, and I know sheโ€™s so proud of me today,โ€ the rapper said through tears, also thanking her great grandmother โ€œBig Mama,โ€ who insisted Megan complete her degree, which sheโ€™s on track to do this year.

โ€œI win a lot of awards as Megan Thee Stallion, but tonight I choose to accept this award as Megan Pete, a soon-to-be college graduate from Houston, a woman who has built a successful career in a male-dominated industry and musical genre, who has earned her respect from people that couldnโ€™t look beyond my public persona,โ€ she shared.

โ€œMy story is probably not too different than a lot of yโ€™alls. As a young girl, I stood in front of my bedroom mirror, practicing for moments just like these,โ€ she also added. โ€œBut I was fortunate to have role modelsโ€”strong, fierce, independent Black women who gave me the tools to stand up for myself and not to limit myself based upon others.

โ€œFrom an early age, they filled me with self-love and determination. Because of them Iโ€™ve never felt unworthy of my success and ashamed of my womanhood. And because of them Iโ€™ve learned to be competitive with myselfโ€”and that other women donโ€™t need to lose for me to win,โ€ Megan continued, โ€œThereโ€™s nothing women canโ€™t achieve when we recognize that...Thereโ€™s room at the table for all of us, and when there isnโ€™t, we need to make room.โ€

To that end, Glamour shares a full list of Meganโ€™s official and very uplifting Hottie Commandments, intended to โ€œturn others into Hotties too.โ€

Suffice to say, original hottie Pepa fully endorses her message.

โ€œTake her in: She is Thee Stallion. Beautiful, bold, assertive, fearless. I love everything that sheโ€™s doing.โ€ she said while introducing the 26-year-old rapper on Monday (h/t Glamour), later adding: โ€œThere were so few women in the game back in the day. We helped open doors, yes, we did. But Megan, she came and kicked the door down, pulled up a seat at the table, ordered a big dinner and poured Hottie Sauce all over the damn thing. She is doing it well, henny. Pushing it real good.โ€
