The West York (Pa.) Council has unanimously accepted Mayor Charles Wasko's offer to resign following controversy after the mayor posted racist Obama memes to his Facebook, the York Daily Record reports.

According to the Daily Record, the vote was accepted to a round of applause from a crowd that had gathered in council chambers Monday night. In a following motion, the council voted 6-0 to appoint Council President Shawn Mauck as the next mayor when Wasko's resignation becomes effective Oct. 21.

"The good news is we get to move on, and we're going to deal with the topic at hand and continue to heal our community and build a better West York," Mauck said.

Mauck will replace Wasko for the rest of the mayoral term until the seat comes up for re-election next year.

Wasko did not attend the meeting.

Earlier this month, the council approved a motion to censure Wasko over his controversial Facebook posts, including two that showed apes with captions referencing President Barack Obama and his family.

One meme showed a wagon full of orangutans with the words, "aww..moving day at the Whitehouse [sic] has finally arrived." Another post suggested that the president should be lynched, showing an image of Clint Eastwood from the film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and a noose with the caption, “Barry, this rope is for you. You wanna bring that empty chair over here!”
