The unidentified teen was discovered with a .22-caliber pistol in his backpack around 9:45 a.m. when it set off the alarm in the metal-detector scanner.

“First day, first gun,” Gregory Floyd, president of the Teamsters City Employees Union Local 237, which represents school safety agents, said. “Why would de Blasio want to remove scanners form schools? It’s crazy.”

The boy was taken to the 88th Precinct station house for questioning.

“This incident is deeply troubling, and we are working in close partnership with the [New York City Police Department] as they conduct an investigation,” city Education Department spokeswoman Toya Holness said. “The NYPD immediately responded and safely confiscated the weapon.”
