Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) has intentions of succeeding Maryland’s Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski, who announced earlier this month that she will not be running after her current term ends in 2017.

According to USA Today Politics, Edwards, who became the first black woman to represent a Maryland district in Congress after being elected in June 2008, is expected to make the announcement for her Senate campaign on Tuesday.
Progressive groups such as EMILY’s List, Democracy for America and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee have reportedly pushed for Edwards to join the race, the news site notes.
“With many diverse potential candidates in the mix, EMILY’s List is focused on making sure this seat will remain in the hands of a progressive woman who will fight for the families of Maryland—just as Sen. Mikulski has done for over 30 years,” Marcy Stech, a spokeswoman for EMILY’s List, said, according to USA Today.
The race for Mikulski’s seat is already looking to be competitive, with former NAACP President Ben Jealous rumored to be thinking about running. According to USA Today, Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is also said to be contemplating campaigning.
