In 2008, Jennifer Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, and brother, Jason, 29, were murdered by Hudson’s former brother-in-law William Balfour in Hudson’s childhood home on Chicago’s South Side.

Monday would have been Hudson’s mother’s 66th birthday, and the singer took to Instagram to remember her mother’s life.
“Today would have been my late mothers 66th bday! In her words ‘If you think you’ve seen it all just keep on living,’” Hudson posted.
Years after the tragic murders, Hudson has become an advocate against violence and has spoken out about how she coped with her family members’ deaths.
Balfour is currently serving life in prison.
