John Singleton, director of Boyz n the Hood, spoke about Cube’s career going from rapping about β€œfuck the police” (for which my 18-year-old son knows him) to being β€œNick with all of the kids” (as my 4-year-old niece knows him) on family movies like Are We There Yet? β€œThe mark of a true man is how many people he influences in his lifetime,” Singleton said. β€œThat’s how I see Cube. When you coming up doing music, movies, just trying to be creative, you never figure you’ll be on the Hollywood Walk of Fame one day.”

Cube sent thanks to all the people who helped shape his career. β€œYou don’t get here by yourself,” he said. β€œToday is not really about Ice Cube. It’s about all the people that helped me get here.”

The ceremony came on the heels of the release of the 25th-anniversary edition of his second album, Death Certificate.
