Nathan West, a spokesman for the Buncombe County Republican Party, confirmed Don Yelton's resignation and acknowledged that it was indeed in direct response to the interview, Business Insider reports.

The interview, which aired Wednesday and was conducted by correspondent Aasif Mandvi, was about North Carolina's voter-ID law, which has prompted a lawsuit by the Justice Department. Yelton told Mandvi that he doesn't consider the law to be racist, "though he has been called a bigot."

Yelton brushed back such criticism, saying that one of his best friends is black. While tossing around the n-word, he criticized blacks for using it themselves. He also said that "lazy black people" want "the government to give them everything."
