Local station WRDW reports that Wayne Anthony Hawes was discovered dead at his home in Appling, Ga, a town that is part of the Augusta, Ga., metropolitan area.

Police say that Hawes may have become unhinged after learning of his wifeโ€™s plans of divorce. The Augusta Chronicle reports that Hawesโ€™ wife was not among his victims but some of her family members were.

Columbia County, Ga., Coroner Vernon Collins confirms that three peopleโ€”Roosevelt Burns, 75; โ€จRheba Mae Dent, 85; andโ€จ Kelia Clark, 31โ€”were gunned down at a home 20 miles west of Augusta. Two othersโ€”Lizzy Williams, 59, andโ€จ Shelly Williams, 62โ€”were shot dead about a mile away.

Police say that Hawes tried unsuccessfully to burn down his home after the homicidal spree.
