The football team’s Twitter campaign to highlight its one-millionth follower caused a social media PR disaster because the winner’s Twitter account contained the n-word.

The Patriots’ account posted a picture with a personalized jersey that read, “@IHateN[—]gers.” The accompanying tweet said, “Thanks for helping us become the first NFL team with 1 million followers! #1MillionPatriots.”

The team deleted the tweet and blamed the mix-up on a filter failure. “We apologize for the regrettable tweet that went out from our account. Our filtering system failed & we will be more vigilant in the future,” the Patriots tweeted.
