In a painful ode to Eric Garner’s last words, his family has created a song that it hopes will uplift the community and spark a conversation about police brutality.

“I Can’t Breathe” is sung by Garner’s sister Ellisha Garner, with rapping done by his brother Steven Flagg. The song is a call for justice in a world with corrupt police who target black people.
“If I lose my car, I can get another one; lose my house, I can get another one; lose my mind, I’ll create another one. They took my brother; I can never get another one,” Flagg rapped.
Garner’s death grabbed national attention when his July 17, 2014, demise was recorded and shared on social media. Garner was wrestled to the ground, and his final words were “I can’t breathe.”
With this week marking the second anniversary of his death, the family hopes that those words are a reminder of a corrupt police system.
